Nurturing Leadership in Uncertain Times

As I opened my laptop for my interview with Kathleen Fariss, the Co-Founder and CEO of Fariss Coaching & Consulting (FC&C) and Strategic Advisor to The Dandelion Philosophy, I couldn't help but laugh at our matching “Teams” background—a room decked out in an overload of Christmas decorations! This small coincidence was a lovely icebreaker, setting the tone for an insightful and inspiring conversation.

While short-term relief can provide immediate assistance and alleviate pressing issues, it often fails to address the root causes of social problems. The term “charity” is typically associated with immediate rescue and relief efforts. But what about philanthropy? How can two concepts that are often used interchangeably differ in meaning?

Addressing Power Relations in Community Development

Since its inception in the late 1980s, Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) has adapted to changing societal needs, demonstrating its responsiveness. At the heart of ABCD lies the belief that communities, by recognising and mobilising their unique strengths, can forge a better future. The Dandelion Philosophy, while aligning with traditional ABCD, distinguishes itself by also prioritising mental well-being, cultural sensitivity, and technology to challenge existing power structures. This holistic approach emerges as a new paradigm for community development, emphasising a holistic method that guides communities on a journey towards true empowerment.

Navigating Complex Transformation: Embracing Systemic Shifts

Today, I want to make a confession: I struggle with the concept and system of charity. Let me qualify my confession by acknowledging that these benevolent organisations serve as beacons of hope during crises. However, in my view, their effectiveness in addressing deeply entrenched systemic issues often proves transient at best. In a landscape rife with hunger, poverty, unemployment, gender-based violence (GBV), loss of identity, and the often unspoken intricacies of "Black tax", the limitations of conventional charity are starkly illuminated in the communities we serve.

The Power of Kindness and Collaboration: Rodwell’s Story

On May 7th, 2021, while asleep at an all-night church gathering outside of Harare, Zimbabwe, 9-year-old Rodwell was viciously attacked and mauled by a hyena. The result of the attack was life-changing injuries, including the loss of one of his eyes, complete destruction of his nose, nasal cartilage and bone, and the loss of his entire upper lip and the left part of his lower lip. Rodwell had been stabilised, however, given the limited resources in Zimbabwe, the family were faced with the challenge of raising an enormous amount of money, out of their reach, to pay for an escorted medical evacuation along with the hospital administrative costs, expenses of surgery, and the post-treatment care. On hearing of Rodwell’s ordeal, The Dandelion Philosophy launched a fundraising campaign in collaboration with Rodwell’s trauma nurse, Maqshuda Kajee. Collective efforts aimed to facilitate comprehensive care and rehabilitation to help this young boy in his plight.

The Lasting Impact of Period Poverty

The world is made up of 8 billion people. 1.8 billion of those people menstruate every month. That comes down to 800 million people menstruating every day. In percentage terms, that is 26% of the global population experiencing monthly period symptoms such as cramps, back and leg pain, blood clots, fainting, bloating, headaches, fatigue, and diarrhoea. Imagine dealing with these symptoms and not having adequate access to, or being able to afford, essential sanitary products. This is the reality for 500 million people.
