Nurturing Leadership in Uncertain Times

An interview with Kathleen Fariss, Strategic Advisor toThe Dandelion Philosophy, by Vilhelmiina Vulli.

As I opened my laptop for my interview with Kathleen Fariss, the Co-Founder and CEO of Fariss Coaching & Consulting (FC&C) and Strategic Advisor to The Dandelion Philosophy, I couldn't help but laugh at our matching “Teams” background—a room decked out in an overload of Christmas decorations! This small coincidence was a lovely icebreaker, setting the tone for an insightful and inspiring conversation.

Kathleen, with her warm presence and engaging personality, is exactly who you'd hope to have as a coach and mentor.

Her career spans over 25 years as a transformative leader in various sectors, and her approach to coaching emphasises courage, connection, and clarity.

It's easy to see why her clients find such value in her guidance—a reminder that I, too, should book a session with her.

Early Inspirations and the Evolution of a Mission

Kathleen's story begins with growing up and living in 13 places in multiple cities in the Inland Empire (IE), Southern California, all before she turned 19.

However, support from organisations like the Children's Fund and the Boys and Girls Club transformed her life. "These resources were my lifeline", Kathleen reflects. "They gave me hope and the opportunity to envision a future beyond my circumstances."

Kathleen's determination led her from being an at-risk youth living in poverty to earning a B.S. in Organisational Management and an M.S. in Leadership and Management. She states that education was her “gateway to change”.

Her academic background has played a crucial role in shaping her career and staying connected with those who supported her along the way.

Since then, she has achieved notable accomplishments:

  • Raised over $15 million for the Lewis Library and Technology Centre.

  • Launched nine institutes and centres.

  • Founded her own consulting and coaching business.

  • Authored a chapter in her first book.

Kathleen's life mission, "service above self", is a testament to her dedication to helping others.

Her experience in fundraising, managing boards, and working with diverse populations positions her uniquely to contribute to organisations like The Dandelion Philosophy.

Taking on an Advisory Role with The Dandelion Philosophy

What initially inspired you to become an advisor for The Dandelion Philosophy, and how has your role evolved since being involved?

My journey with The Dandelion Philosophy began with a resonance for their mission to provide hope and psychosocial support.

When I heard Nazeem (Founder and CEO of The Dandelion Philosophy) speak about the realm of possibilities, I knew I had to be part of it.

My role has always been about championing leaders and helping them turn their visions into reality. I'm drawn to working with visionaries who are eager to scale their businesses and make a global impact.

How do you see your advisory role contributing to the success of The Dandelion Philosophy's mission?

My greatest strength lies in strategy. I believe in meeting people where they are, and ensuring they have access to the resources they need to elevate their lives.

As a builder at heart, my role involves rallying others around the cause and building capacity to support The Dandelion Philosophy’s global advocacy.

What valuable insights have you gained from your advisory role at The Dandelion Philosophy that have influenced your perspective on your career and personal life?

One profound insight is that trauma, if not transformed, gets transmitted.

Working with The Dandelion Philosophy has highlighted the importance of investing in personal healing, and my interactions here have helped me become more whole. In turn, I can invest more healthily in others.

Embracing Change

Moving beyond her work with The Dandelion Philosophy, Kathleen shared insight into the ethos of Fariss Coaching & Consulting (FC&C):

"Our core values are courage, connection, and clarity. We empower leaders and dreamers, helping them navigate change and uncertainty by finding their unique voices and accessing the right resources. We focus on strategic aspects of change, process improvement, people management, community building, and managing relationships.”

Kathleen's philosophy is deeply rooted in the reality of constant change, stating that "leadership is about adapting to change while maintaining your core values and vision.”

Kathleen attributes much of her success to learning while doing, engaging with the hard inside-out work, and, most of all, to her family and community.

"Having a supportive network has been vital. My husband, Mike, and my sons, Michael and Jeremy, have been my rock. Their support has allowed me to pursue my passion and make a difference."

The Dandelion Philosophy and The Future of FC&C

Looking ahead, Kathleen is optimistic about the future of FC&C: "We're constantly evolving. Our goal is to remain at the forefront of leadership coaching, helping more individuals and organisations achieve their fullest potential."

As our interview concluded, I was left admiring Kathleen's passion and dedication. Her work not only transforms organisations but also touches lives on a deeply personal level.

With her unique blend of experience, empathy, and strategic insight, I see Kathleen as a beacon of hope for those seeking professional and personal growth.

In a constantly changing world, leaders like Kathleen remind us that with the right guidance, support, and values, we can not only adapt but thrive. Her journey is a testament to the power of transformational leadership and its impact on individuals, organisations, and communities.

And, I can’t wait to see which “Teams” backgrounds we’ll choose next time!
